Our Story

In 2001, Flanner Buchanan opened the Community Life Center on the campus of Washington Park East Cemetery. The “jewel” of the eastside, the Community Life Center is now a popular destination for weddings, funerals and community events. The Community Life Center’s popularity as a wedding venue really took off toward the end of 2010. Over the past 2 1/2 years the Community Life Center has hosted close to 500 events. These events have ranged from weddings and proms to business meetings and celebration of life services.

Community Life Center

Built by Deerfield Construction Company, the 10,000 square-foot Community Life Center features a grand ballroom, rotunda, courtyard, and tower as well as bridal and groom’s suites. The Buchanan Ballroom can accommodate parties of up to 300 guests and is fitted with a built-in dance floor as well as state-of-the-art audio/visual equipment. The Rotunda houses an art gallery, complete with several original pieces, many of which feature the first President of the United States, George Washington. The Rotunda also boasts a spectacular fountain. Eighty-four chandeliers grace the halls of the Community Life Center. The significance of the chandeliers is that they were created by Schonbek– the same international lighting manufacturer that crafted chandeliers for Buckingham Palace as well as the White House. The Crystal Tower houses the Community Life Center’s 40,000 crystal chandelier which is a beacon of light for all of the east side. The open-air courtyard is surrounded by seasonal roses and can seat up to 300 guests. It is graced by the presence of the Crystal Tower, which many brides prefer to use for their “grand entrance.”

The Bridal Suite was added in June 2010. The Bridal Suite is complete with five individual vanities as well as plenty of outlets so that the bride and bridesmaids can ready themselves onsite. The Retreat was renovated in 2013. The Retreat features several sofas and lounge seating as well as a flat-screen television to keep the groom and groomsmen entertained as the bride and bridesmaids finish getting ready.
